So, I needed some green (unseasoned or dried) white oak for steaming some boat frames into shape on a round bilge boat.  I usually go to some local sawmills to get what I need, but they weren’t cutting white oak anytime soon.  The farmer that owns the property adjacent to us lets me cut firewood in his forest, so I put the family on a white oak tree hunt, and, with help from a tree I.D. book, they found a couple.  I chose one, cut it down, and bucked it into manageable logs and hauled them out.  I also found an elf in the woods, and he came home with me in the cart.  I think he’ll be useful.

When I got them to the shop, I was able to split them pretty easy because they were nice and straight.  I split them into eighths and then milled them down with power tools from there.

They steamed very nicely being so fresh!  It’s nice to be able to do it this way when I have to, but I think I’ll buy unseasoned oak from the mill when available, my back will be very grateful!
